Farther down the trail

Westchester Community Image Council members and other volunteers worked to prepare the forest preserve trailhead at 31st Street east of Sunnyside Avenue May 12 for native flowers.

For several hours, volunteers removed invasive buckthorn, getting the site ready to plant with native perennials later this spring.

The work was part of the WCIC’s long-term project with the Cook County Forest Preserve District’s Preserve Keeper Corps program.

Volunteers have already spent many hours removing invasive plants from the trail entrances at the other end of that stretch of the Salt Creek Trail, Cermak and Mannheim roads. The WCIC will plant native perennials at that area, too. Once complete, the burst of color at the trailheads will enhance this major gateway to our community.

Volunteers are welcome to help on our regular work dates, which are typically held from 9 a.m. to noon on the third Sunday of the month. Check our Web site for the locations and most up-to-date information.
