Everything's coming up native perennials

At the southwest corner of Cermak and Mannheim, near the trail head to the forest preserve, the WCIC has completed the planting of two new beds of native perennial flowers and plants.
On September 16, WCIC members and volunteers added purple cone flower (the official flower of Cook County and Illinois), black-eyed Susans, prairie smoke, Northern drop seed and little blue stem to the beds. Next spring, people driving, biking and walking by the intersection will see blooms beginning in April and emerging throughout the early summer.
In addition, some young volunteers grabbed some pokey sticks and picked up litter along the trail.
The day was part of our long-term project with the Cook County Forest Preserve District Preserve Keeper Corps program, which we do in conjunction with the Westchester Lions Club.
These efforts are part of our ongoing goal of creating colorful, welcoming gateways to our village at key intersections.
