From the WCIC Director

Hello,

The WCIC Board of Directors would like to thank the many volunteers that showed up Aug. 24 for another round of Westchester Boulevard garden plantings. It was by far the largest outpouring of volunteer support that WCIC has ever received at a beautification event.

In addition to several residents who adopted gardens, volunteers from Westchester Gardens, the Westchester Lions, Trustees Pat Casey and Rick Fox, members of the Westchester Wildcats baseball team and others came to help. We thank all of the volunteers for their hard labor, their civic pride in where they live and for helping make Westchester a great place to live.

As an article in the Chicago Tribune was titled in Sunday's paper: "It takes a garden to raise a village." We are extremely grateful to the citizens of Westchester that have adopted these gardens and embraced our program and vision.

Also on Aug. 24, before work began, we paid an early morning tribute to one of our own directors who has done so much for this village and for the WCIC. Without him the Adopt-A-Garden project would not be such a huge success.

The WCIC Board presented Mr. Mike Isherwood with the WCIC's 2008 Bull Dog Award for his tenacity in managing the Boulevard project, but also for his all-around ability to fix, restore, build and improve anything he touches. Mike, we are grateful to have you among us and proud to know you.

In another few weeks there will be another day when more gardens will be planted. Please keep an eye on this site for the date and time.

Finally, if you have reserved a garden and see that the garden is in, but there is no sign, please do not panic. The signs usually take up to 6 weeks to obtain from our supplier. We will install them as soon as we have them in our hands.

Sincerely,

Jim Lange, on behalf of the Board of Directors
