Things are heating up with the WCIC!
On
Sunday, February 18, volunteers with the WCIC spent the chilly morning pulling
buckthorn from the forest preserve at Mannheim and Cermak Street and creating a
big – controlled – bonfire.
Working with Bill Koenig of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, about
25 people worked to clear and burn invasive buckthorn from the area, which will
help native species, such as oak trees, thrive. With less buckthorn brush, the
forest floor can recover and sprout a healthy native ground cover. In the
spring, WCIC will spread native vegetation seed mix in the cleared areas.
Clearing
the Cermak Road entrances to the Salt Creek Trail is part of the WCIC’s overall
effort to enhance the entryway to the village that was begun by landscaping the
median at Mannheim and Balmoral last summer.
The next Salt Creek Trail work day will be Sunday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to
noon. Volunteers are welcome.
Tools are provided; participants should dress for the weather. For more information
