WCIC’s next project brings in the Lions, the zoo and the preserves
On October 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers from the Westchester Community Image Council will work with the Westchester Lions Club, Forest Preserve District of Cook County and Brookfield Zoo to clean up the southwest and southeast corners of Mannheim and Cermak roads.
Members from the WCIC and the Lions will clean the sites and prepare them for spring planting as volunteers with the forest preserve district’s Keeper Corps program. The Lions Club has donated $250 toward the project and has pledged additional funds for next spring when planting begins. The Brookfield Zoo plans to take much of the trimmed brush and other plant clippings to feed to animals.
Over the winter, WCIC members will design native Illinois perennial gardens at those corners, as well as at the bike trail on 31st Street east of Sunnyside Avenue and at the southwest and southeast corners of 31st and Wolf Road. Plants will be chosen in conjunction with a steward from the forest preserves.
Stop by and say hello when we're out there, and look to this site for a wrap-up of the event and announcements of future projects.
