How you can help the WCIC

Sunday work day

Volunteers are welcome to join us this weekend as we work on Westchester Boulevard. We'll meet by the Governor's Home Town Award sign at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. We'll begin with some weeding and litter pick-up in the Boulevard Gardens beginning at the far north end, and we'll finish by picking up litter along the railroad embankment north of Roosevelt Road. We can supply work gloves, trash bags and yard waste bags. We can also sign forms older students need to track their community service hours.

If you have a couple of hours, or even just enough time to weed one garden, we are grateful for any volunteers. If you have any questions, please e-mail us or call Paige Fumo Fox at 708.562-6035.

Our first clean-up of the year, held March 22, was a great day.

We picked up litter around the median garden at Mannheim and Cermak; around the Welcome Garden; and at the trailheads. Read more about the day in our news page.

How you can help around town

The WCIC encourages volunteerism. Here is our volunteer clearinghouse - connecting people with talents and time to give with organizations needing assistance.

The Westchester Lions Club has an ongoing collection for used eyeglasses and hearing aids. A collection box is located inside the Westchester Public Library.

Boy Scout Troop 73 will respectfully dispose of your worn American flags in a Flag Day ceremony in June if you deposit your flag in the collection box at the Westchester Public Library.

Aspire has several ongoing volunteer opportunities. The Westchester-based not-for-profit which supports children and adults with developmental disabilities and delays needs volunteers to sort through donations and work the cash register at its resale shop, Aspire on Broadway in Melrose Park. Anyone handy with some carpentry or gardening tools is invited to do a little spring sprucing up at the children's facility or one of the residential facilities. Babysitters are occasionally needed at the children's center to care for children while their parents attend meetings. Call Julie Gies, 708.547-3575 ext. 3554 or visit www.aspireofillinois.org.

Does your organization need volunteers? Let us help you spread the word. E-mail us information at info@westchestercic.org. We'll need a description of the event, date and times volunteers are needed, and contact information.
