Westchester Community Image Council delivers enhanced look to post office

Westchester Community Image Council, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the appearance of the village, spent the morning of Sunday, August 27, sprucing up the entryway to the Westchester post office.

Volunteers with the group trimmed bushes, spread mulch and planted native grasses and perennials, such as sedum, daylilies and veronica. The approximately $200 project was funded through memberships and donations. Bill Ernst of Ernst Treecare donated the mulch.

“It’s a central location in town that we thought all the citizens in the village would enjoy seeing landscaped, and we are glad the Post Office agreed to work with us on this project.” said Jim Lange, president and executive director of the group. WCIC hopes to expand its role on the post office grounds next year as well continuing to maintain the areas it plants this year.

"The fall season is upon us and perennials should get established before (the) winter sets in," Lange said, "but we hope to add colorful annuals in the spring to brighten up the building facade."

Formed this spring, the WCIC has landscaped the medians at Mannheim and Balmoral and at Crestwood and Mannheim. It has also worked with Westchester Gardens to landscape the grounds of the Westchester Public Library. All WCIC projects are made possible by the donations of citizens and businesses in town.

WCIC will return to the library Sept. 9, adding a landscape border of boulders to the gardens in front of the building.

Membership information is available at several locations throughout town, including the Westchester Public Library, MidAmerica Bank, Harris Bank, Bruce Horek State Farm Insurance Agency and Pack, Wrap & Ship in Westbrook Plaza, or by e-mailing the group at WCIC501@aol.com.
