Westchester Community Image Council completes first project July 1

The median at  Mannheim Road south of Balmoral in Westchester received a complete makeover July 1, thanks to the efforts of the Westchester Community Image Council.

The WCIC, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the appearance of the village, created a new landscape on the median, including limestone outcroppings, daylilies, liatris, blue dune oat grass, crimson sedum and wax begonias. The landscape design was created by WCIC members Alice Kaufman and Gina Lange.

At one of the busiest intersections in the town, the median serves as a gateway to the village. The group also spruced up the small triangle median at Crestwood Lane.

“We are pleased that we were able to complete this project for the whole Westchester community. A big thank you goes out to the many residents and businesses that donated to WCIC and made this project possible,” said Jim Lange, WCIC president and executive director. “Now WCIC will move on to other areas of the community as part of our goal to enhance the image of the village we are proud to call home.”

Over the summer, the group will plan for landscaping more public areas, sponsor clean-up events, and participate in the Westchester Fourth of July parade. In addition, the WCIC is planning for a fall festival.

The median project was funded through WCIC memberships and received the support of both the Westchester Village Board and the Illinois Department of Transportation. WCIC members will maintain the median once it is finished, with assistance from the nearby MidAmerica Bank. Dunkin’ Donuts, Giordano’s and Jewel donated food and beverages for the volunteers during their work July 1.

“I’m very proud of how much we have accomplished in so short a time,” said WCIC Vice President Alice Kaufman. This is a very committed group of people, and we hope more people will join as members.”

Anyone interested in becoming a member may call Lange at (708) 404-5923 or Mo Meadows Ernst at (708) 205-1140. The group may be contacted via e-mail at  WCIC501@aol.com. Membership forms are also available at the Westchester Public Library.
